Story

Last year our much beloved wife, mum, daughter, sister, granddaughter, niece, cousin and friend Mel had her life here cut short by a rare type of liver cancer. What many people don't know is that at the time of Mel's diagnosis in March 2019 she had just finished training for her first 10k run. She was so proud of herself and excited for the event that she never got to do.

On 21 February I'm going to run (I say that in the broadest possible sense since apparently my body is a lost more decrepit than the last time I did this 12 years ago) the Round the Bays Half Marathon for Mel and to raise money for Mary Potter Hospice.

Our family know the importance of great palliative care. Sadly and almost unbelievably in New Zealand palliative care is the only core health service that isn't fully funded by the Government. Instead hospices rely on fundraising, donations and their own income streams to cover up to half the cost of providing their services. Last year was a particularly terrible year for many hospices on that front with COVID-19 lockdowns meaning that many of their fundraising activities had to be canceled and their income streams through things like hospice shops dried up as they weren't allowed to operate.

I'm aiming to raise $21,100 ($1,000 for every km) to for this health and community service that is vital for so many Wellingtonians and their families who need end of life care and support.

Donations made by NZers qualify for IRDs charitable donations tax rebate.

The Mary Potter Hospice Foundation

We are here to provide the highest quality specialist palliative care service we can to people living with a terminal illness and to give their families any support they may need.

The care we provide acknowledges the uniqueness of each person and we strive to work in partnership to meet patient and family needs according to their cultural and spiritual upbringing.

The Hospice has an 12-bed Inpatient Unit in Wellington and Community Palliative Care bases in Wellington, Paraparaumu and Porirua. We also provide care and support to people and their families in their own homes.

On a day-to-day basis, the Hospice will work closely with you, your General Practitioner (GP) and other health professionals to provide your care and support. Along with our inpatient and community care, the Hospice provides Occupational Therapy, Social Work and Counselling and Spiritual Care services.

The Hospice also employs Education, Quality Improvement, Administration, Fundraising and Research staff, and relies on the assistance of many Volunteers who donate their time and energy to assist in many aspects of Hospice services.
